Frightening48 Full Rules
PLEASE READ THE RULES
1: Frightening48 will commence the “Official 48-Hour Time Period” on Friday at 6 pm.
2: The participating group/team must complete and deliver its film by 6 pm on Sunday.
2b: Delivery can consist of uploading all materials to the designated server or providing (through email) a link to the file and links to other required resources. All uploads must be finished by the conclusion of the “Official 48-Hour Time Period” to be considered “on time.” Be sure to factor both render time and delivery time into your planning.
2c: Deliveries that are past the deadline are disqualified from judging and audience awards. Films delivered past the deadline but before 9pm on Sunday may still be screened at the discretion of the Sergeant at Arms and PRIMAA.
2d: Deliveries past 9pm on Sunday, will not be screened.
2e: Films can be redelivered any number of times prior to the end of the “Official 48-Hour Time Period.” The last-received delivery from a team prior to the end of the “Official 48-Hour Time Period” will be considered its official submission.
2f: If a film cannot play due to technical difficulties it may not be considered “delivered.” The Sergeant at Arms will do his/her best to notify a team of technical difficulties but it is the team’s responsibility to ensure its film plays correctly. Correcting a technical difficulty and redelivering a film before the end of the “Official 48-Hour Time Period” is acceptable.
3: All teams must register through PRIMAA’s website and pay the submission fee by the payment deadline.
4: Each participating group will be assigned required elements that must appear in its film:
- The required Line of Dialogue must be used verbatim. It may be spoken, sung, and/or written.
- The required Prop must be seen on-screen and used as a prop
5: All creative work must take place during the “Official 48-Hour Time Period.” Any creative work in advance of the start of the “Official 48-Hour Time Period” is prohibited. Creative work includes, but is not limited to:
- Writing the script
- Rehearsing
- Costume/Set Design
- Shooting
- Editing
- Sound Design
- Rendering
- Outputting to tape or other media
5b: All creative work must be done in the Peace Region of Alberta/BC
5c: Contact the Sergeant at Arms with any questions during the competition. Contact information will be provided in your registration package.
6: The only work that may begin prior to the start of the “Official 48-Hour Time Period” is:
- Organizing Crew
- Organizing Cast
- Securing Equipment
- Scouting/Securing Locations
- Inventorying Props and/or other “on hand” items
- Prepping software, media, and/or workflow
6b: Email info@primaa.org with any questions arising prior to the start of the competition.
7: All footage must be shot within the “Official 48-Hour Time Period.”
- Stock footage or footage shot or created at another time may be used, but must less than 5% of your total run time.
- NOTE: 5% of total run time equals 3 seconds per complete minute of run time.
- Animation and special effects are permitted, but must be created during the 48 hour time period. (Note: Stock footage as part of a special effect in a third party special effects program is permissible. For example: lens flares, muzzle flashes, explosions)
- You must have rights to use all footage, music, audio elements, and other audio/visual material you submit.
7b: Contact the Sergeant at Arms with any questions about stock elements.
8: Participating groups may use pre-recorded music; however the music must:
- Exist in the public domain (both the composition AND the recording), or
- Be music that has been created for and/or licensed by express permission of the copyright holders to use in this 48-Hour challenge, or
- Be downloaded, purchased and/or obtained from a royalty-free music service for the purpose of this 48-Hour challenge.
8b: The proof of license and/or use may be requested by PRIMAA or the Sergeant at Arms. Failure to show proof in a reasonable amount of time may be grounds for disqualification.
8c: As with music, pre-recorded sound effects are allowed. Sounds also must be licensed to use.
9: The finished film must be between 2 to 7 minutes in length including credits and the required title card.
9b: The film MUST have a title card which runs at least 5 seconds identifying the Team Name. It may appear at either the beginning or the end of the film.
10: Final Delivery Requirements - Submit the following as your finished package:
- IMPORTANT: All physical media deliveries (USB sticks, hard drives, etc.) must be readable by both a Mac and a PC. The exFAT file system is recommended, please be sure to format your drive/USB stick to exFAT prior to saving your files. Test your files! And test your export process before the challenge.
- Your Film
- ProRes 422 or H.264 Codec
- Correct Resolution: HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) - 16:9 Aspect Ratio
- If using a different aspect ratio, use pillarbox or letterbox bars to keep your actual file dimensions as 1920x1080 HD. Failure to do so may result in a stretched/distorted image during the screening.
- Stereo Soundtrack
- We cannot handle 5.1 or other surround formats in screenings.
- Set your audio levels at -6dB, and do a pass through your project to mix your audio (set appropriate volume levels).
- Name your file as follows:
- Team Name - Film Name.ext
- Where:
- TEAM NAME = Your Team's Name
- FILM NAME = Title of Your Film
- .ext = Extension (.mov for ProRes, .mp4 for H.264)
- Example filename for team "Awesome" and film titled "Halloween" using ProRes format:
- Awesome - Halloween.mov
- Poster Frame (Thumbnail)
- JPG or PNG Format
- 16:9 Aspect Ratio
- High Resolution Preferred (e.g. 3-10MB).
- Preferred Minimum resolution on longest side: 2048 pixels
- Name the file as follows:
- Team Name - Film Name - Thumbnail.ext
- Where:
- TEAM NAME = Your Team's Name
- FILM NAME = Title of Your Film
- .ext = Extension (.jpg or .png, whatever you chose)
- 3-5 Behind the Scenes Photos
- Please provide 3-5 behind the scenes photos of your production. These will be used for social media and marketing.
- JPG or PNG format.
- High Resolution Preferred (e.g. 1920x1080 or larger).
- Minimum resolution on shortest side: 600 pixels
- Name the files as follows:
- TEAM NAME - FILM NAME - BTS X.ext
- Where:
- TEAM NAME = Your Team's Name
- FILM NAME = Title of Your Film
- X = Number of Picture
- .ext = Extension (.jpg or .png, whatever you chose)
- Example filenames for team "We Rule" and film titled "Halloween" using JPG photos:
- We Rule - Halloween - BTS 1.jpg
- We Rule - Halloween - BTS 2.jpg
- We Rule - Halloween - BTS 3.jpg
- We Rule - Halloween - BTS 4.jpg
- We Rule - Halloween - BTS 5.jpg
11: Films cannot be shown publicly prior to the screening. Doing so will disqualify the submission. After the screening, each film is the filmmaker's to do with as he or she pleases. PRIMAA retains the right to screen submissions in part or in whole in other contexts, advertising, or as part of other events.
12: PRIMAA is indemnified from any action regarding a breach of copyright on the part of the participating teams.
13: While PRIMAA does not intend to censor for content or quality, it is at the PRIMAA board’s sole discretion whether a film will or will not be screened as part of the 48-Hour Challenge. Screening will be on PRIMAA's YouTube channel, please refer to YouTube's guidelines for publication.
14: The Judges’ Decisions are Final.
15: It is the responsibility of teams to obtain any release forms or permission to film individuals or members of the general public, or to film in privately owned locations. Permission to film and subsequently screen any footage containing minors under the age of 18 must be obtained in writing from parents or legal guardians.
16: If you are under 18 years of age a parent must sign the release form in your registration package.
